Ribbit Radio: A Coming Revolution in VHF/UHF EmComm?

If you’ve been around HamRadio 360 for any length of time, you know that I love digital modes and the potential they offer the user, especially during challenging operating conditions. This new (to me) mode looks extremely viable and I wanted to hop in here to discuss it. Ribbit is a newly developed digital text messaging mode designed to transform VHF/UHF communications for both recreational and emergency use. Invented by Pierre W4CKX, Ribbit offers a distributed text messaging network that significantly increases the density of information transmitted per spectrum used. By leveraging the computing power of modern smartphones, Ribbit enhances the capabilities of a simple Handi Talkie (HT) without requiring any additional hardware.

Redefining VHF/UHF Communications

Traditional VHF/UHF communications have long relied on voice-based transmissions, which often limit the amount of information that can be conveyed efficiently. (**That said, Packet Radio is a tried and true digital platform, perfect for EMComm, but mostly forgotten and unused. Packet also requires a few odds and ends that most Ham Radio Operators no longer have in their shack**). Ribbit, however, revolutionizes this approach by introducing a novel digital text messaging mode. By utilizing the computing power, GPS capabilities, and intuitive touchscreen interfaces of smartphones, Ribbit maximizes the potential of VHF/UHF simplex and repeater communication.

Key Features of Ribbit

Increased Information Density

Ribbit’s primary advantage lies in its ability to transmit a higher density of information per spectrum allocated. By harnessing the power of digital text messaging, Ribbit overcomes the limitations of voice communications and enables hams to exchange more data efficiently.

Distributed and Redundant Network

Ribbit operates as a distributed text messaging platform, ensuring redundancy and reliability even during emergencies. This network architecture allows Ribbit to function seamlessly across radio links and cellular networks, eliminating the dependence on internet connectivity in critical situations.

ARES Communication Transformation

One of Ribbit’s core objectives is to transform Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) communication capabilities. By adopting Ribbit, ARES groups can shift from voice-based communication to text-based messaging, bringing numerous advantages. Weekly Nets, used for check-ins and traffic updates, can transition to text-based exchanges, streamlining communication and enhancing efficiency. Moreover, Ribbit introduces valuable functionalities like data tables for conducting comprehensive situational assessment reports, further improving emergency response coordination.

Local Ribbit Servers for Added Resilience

To ensure uninterrupted communication in times of crisis, local Ham Radio clubs can choose to deploy a Ribbit server on their repeaters. This deployment provides a local copy of all Ribbit communications, allowing them to function independently of internet connectivity. By utilizing cost-effective hardware such as Raspberry Pi or even a recycled shack PC, these servers can store approximately two years of data, ensuring data integrity and availability during emergencies.

Recreational Applications

Ribbit is not limited to emergency services alone. It also offers various features to enhance recreational ham radio activities. Whether engaging in Simplex Ribbit text messaging, utilizing Ribbit for Summits On The Air (SOTA) and Parks On The Air (POTA) operations, participating in Ribbit Satellite QSOs, or utilizing it as an online message board and knowledge base resource, Ribbit caters to the diverse needs and interests of the ham radio community.

Join the Ribbit Revolution

Ribbit represents a paradigm shift in VHF/UHF communications, empowering hams with a powerful and versatile digital text messaging mode. With its ability to transmit a higher density of information, distributed network architecture, and support for both recreational and emergency use, Ribbit opens up new possibilities for ham radio enthusiasts. Embrace the Ribbit revolution today and experience the future of efficient and reliable communications in the world of Hams.
